Background of the Study

With the increasing reliance on digital tools for collaboration and data sharing, universities face significant challenges in ensuring the security and privacy of sensitive academic and administrative information. File sharing is a common activity within university networks, but it also poses risks, such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and malware propagation (Junaid et al., 2023).

To address these security concerns, implementing secure file sharing protocols is essential. These protocols ensure that files are transmitted and stored securely within the university’s network, protecting sensitive data from unauthorized access and potential exploitation. Several secure file sharing methods, such as encryption, digital signatures, and access control policies, can be adopted to strengthen the security of file sharing in university networks (Sani et al., 2024). This study will explore the implementation of these secure file sharing protocols in Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, to safeguard sensitive academic and administrative data.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing use of digital platforms for file sharing at Federal University, Kashere, there is a lack of robust security measures to protect the files shared within the university’s network. This study aims to investigate the current file sharing practices and identify vulnerabilities, ultimately proposing secure protocols to safeguard the university’s digital assets.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current file sharing practices at Federal University, Kashere, and identify existing security gaps.

  2. To design and implement secure file sharing protocols that align with the university’s network infrastructure.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented secure file sharing protocols in improving data security.

Research Questions

  1. What are the existing file sharing practices at Federal University, Kashere, and what are their associated security risks?

  2. How can secure file sharing protocols be implemented in the university’s network to improve data protection?

  3. What is the impact of implementing secure file sharing protocols on the security and efficiency of data sharing within the university?

Significance of the Study

The findings from this study will help Federal University, Kashere, enhance its file sharing practices by implementing secure protocols that protect sensitive data. This will reduce the risk of data breaches, unauthorized access, and cyberattacks, contributing to a safer digital environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the implementation of secure file sharing protocols within the network of Federal University, Kashere. It does not extend to other aspects of the university’s cybersecurity infrastructure, such as email or web security. The research is limited to file sharing activities within the university's campus network.

Definitions of Terms

  • File Sharing Protocols: Set of rules or standards used to transmit and share files securely over a network.

  • Encryption: The process of converting data into a format that cannot be read by unauthorized users.

  • Access Control: Policies and procedures used to ensure that only authorized users can access specific resources.
